Materials I Use for My Handmade Baby Mobiles

A guide to the materials behind FluffyTailsbyMia nursery mobiles

Creating a handmade baby mobile is not just about design — the materials matter just as much. Every piece in my nursery mobiles is carefully chosen to be soft, lightweight and safe for baby rooms.

In this guide, I’m sharing the main materials I use when sewing my handmade felt baby mobiles, along with why I chose them.

Wool Felt Blends

The main material I use is high-quality wool felt blends.

Wool felt has a beautiful soft texture and holds its shape well, which makes it perfect for creating small animals, clouds, moons, and other nursery elements.

I usually source my felt from Canadian Felt Shop, which offers a beautiful range of soft neutral colors that work perfectly for Scandinavian and cottage-style nurseries.

Why wool felt works well for baby mobiles:

  •  soft texture
  •  lightweight
  •  holds shape beautifully
  •  perfect for hand sewing small details

Wool Felt Balls

The soft felt balls that hold the mobile together are made from compressed wool fibers.

They add gentle movement and texture while keeping the design light and balanced.

For my mobiles I often use felt balls from Felt & Yarn, which are known for their quality and beautiful natural color palette.

Felt balls are ideal because they:

  • are very lightweight
  • add texture and softness
  • help create balanced mobile designs

Natural Wooden Rings

Each mobile is built on a natural wooden ring, which provides a simple and timeless base.

I prefer wooden rings because they:

  •  create a warm Scandinavian nursery look
  •  are strong and durable
  •  complement neutral nursery decor

Natural wood also keeps the design minimal and elegant, allowing the handmade elements to stand out.

Hypoallergenic Stuffing

To give each element a soft shape, I use hypoallergenic polyester stuffing.

This type of filling is commonly used in toys and baby products because it is lightweight and keeps the shapes fluffy without adding extra weight.

You can usually find this stuffing at:

  • Walmart
  • Amazon
  • craft stores

Using lightweight stuffing is important so the mobile can move gently above the crib.

Strong Sewing Thread and Hand Sewing Needle

All elements of my baby mobiles are hand-sewn, which allows for precise details and a softer handmade finish.

For durability, I use strong sewing thread that securely holds each piece together while remaining almost invisible in the design.

Hand sewing also allows me to carefully control the shape of each small element.

Why Materials Matter in Baby Mobiles

The combination of these materials helps create nursery mobiles that are:

  •  lightweight
  •  soft and visually calm
  •  carefully balanced
  •  designed for modern nursery spaces

Every mobile is made slowly and thoughtfully, with attention to small details that make a nursery feel warm and special.

A Note From the Maker

FluffyTailsbyMia was created as a tribute to my first daughter, Mariia, whose nickname was Mia. Every mobile I create carries that story — a small piece of warmth and imagination for a baby’s room.

Thank you for supporting handmade work and small businesses.
